Alpha Channel Blues

Does Anybody else use corel photo paint?

I have Corel Photo paint 9 to make textures in. Every time I try to save a targa with an alpha channel it gives me a message “cannot save alpha channels to this format”. I’ve saved alpha channels to targa with corel photo paint before. And As I remember it now, I had to use my 30 days of free costumer support to do it. Now I can’t remember how I did it! I even have the officail corelpress photo paint handbook! and they don’t tell you jack about working with targa alphachannels. All it mentions about targa is that it can take 24 bit color and an 8 bit alpha. I tried bringing the image’s color mode down to 8bit. then I saved the mask, and loaded it up later into the 24 bit image, as it’s alpha channel. It still brings up the error claiming that targa doesn’t support alpha at all. Which is such a croc. I’ve been working with blender and my paint programs for longer than three years now. It’s as if the world around me is slowly acting as if I am a moron, rather than me actually becoming a moron. Yes, it’s crazy talk from a disturbed young man. help me please!

Personally I would download the GIMP. It rules.

I use to be able to install gimp on my windows machine. But just in time for my alpha dilema, Gimp has decided to effectively block all installation of gimp on windows(at least from my perspective) by requiring you to install something called gtk that cannot be simply installed on windows. It looks like it has to be compiled. And to top it all off, there is no mention of this on the gimp site, they simply say ““install” this”. without any other word about. I don’t know about you, but I think thats snooty as all anything. And I personally think it’s part of a plan to drop gimp for windows. I have installed film gimp “Cinepaint” but it doesn’t properly track my mouse, and I can’t do a thing with it.

Actually, it’s easy. It’s just a regular install. You just have to install the windows installer thingy first. Like I said though, they are both just normal exe install packages. Go here: http://www2.arnes.si/~sopjsimo/gimp/

Oh yeah, and if you are in the States anyway, go ahead and download the gif thingy. The patent ran out, so no probs.

Yeah, there is Gimp and then “Gimp for windows”.

Thats the exact page I was talking about! the gtk-whatever for windows link gives me a strange file format that I have to go to another site to download the extractor. Which, once it’s all done, is a series of folders, some with makefiles in them. I can’t find any executables

Hold on. I am a moron! there it is!!! I clicked the link below all that stuff. sorry. One day I’ll stop wasting you guys’ time. %|

I’ll check out the gimp-alpha tutorial at the blender3d site now. thanks!
