The docs (and tool tip) talk about locking the alpha channel of the verts when painting, however I can’t for the life of me figure out how to paint to the alpha channel in the first place. The brush tools only seem to show values for RGB, if the brush can only paint to RGB then what on earth is this checkbox doing?
After some experimentation I think I’ve got a better understanding of this. So to add transparency into the vertex alpha channel you need to set the blend drop-down to “Erase Alpha”, knowing this does still make the checkbox I mentioned a little confusing as there doesn’t seem to be any other way to accidentally paint into the alpha channel anyway, this checkbox seems a bit redundant to me? One last gottya with this is that currently none of the viewport render engines show the transparency you paint into the alpha, I know that it is working however as I exported my test mesh into Maya and could see the alpha values had been applied. I might log this as a bug.
