alpha leaving strange artifacts

iv created a uv map with an alpha layer, and followed the following tutorials workflow:

but im getting strange artifacts in my transparent layer see image 2

so what I did is deselect col- under mapto in the materials panel to see what would happen, and I get (image1) the alpha works perfectly

but when I select the col button I get strange white pixels everywhere, that even reflect as white shadows?

iv checked that those areas are completely transparent in the photoshop file, and not maybe a little gray, and they are completly transparent

what could be causing this
