These trees are home made alpha maps. I described how to do it in a thread in general titled ‘alpha maps amplify each other?’, These stand up well to the commercially made variety, and Lsystem makes such choice trees,…I think I will make a few more, and do some extreme alpha renders.
wo, could we see some of the alpha maps? (not a render)
sure here is the tga. feel free to use it.

And if you don’t know how to use it, here is how,…it is all one image, so,…easy way, crop and save 4 times. Better way:
- load tga into UV editor
- go into face select mode
- In UV editor, call up the pic, and adjust the corners of the square by selecting them with A or bounds select, and scaling, adjusting them so they encompass only the tree you want that plane to use
- Go out of face select mode,…and go into materials>>add new>>texture>>add new>>image. pull up the tga.
- click on ‘use alpha’, and ‘anti’
- go back to materials, and for material coordinates select UV, and click on ‘alpha’ for the mapping
- now on the left, click ztransp, shadeless, and turn the alpha slider all the way down. Also, I think if you don’t want it to cast shadow, click ‘env’. And that’s it.
Very nice work. I tried to do this recently myself, but I couldn’t get the tree parts to be completely opaque. Methinks I’m off to see that thread you mentioned above to see how you got it to work.

Looks nice! I’d like to see a close up of one of those trees. Its hard to see them.

I posted the tga just above.
They look great, I’ll be keeping this in mind

just a note: my ISP seems to be on the fritz, so if you don’t see the pic at the top of the page, you probably won’t be able to download the alpha map. This has happened before, and seems to last usually a few hours, so feel free to try back later if you really want it. sorry!
Hey, my ISP is back up, and I replaced the tga with a zipped version, so please feel free to download. I have been cranking out a bunch more trees vines and bushes with Lsystem, so I may put up some more tgas soon. I hope to eventually have enough variety to fill out just about any landscape.
So hold on… you mean I can have 3d trees? Or are those just 2D ones?
They are just a tga mapped onto a plane and set to alpha, so they are 2D, not 3D, but they are made to work within a 3d scene.
<edit> but if you want the 3D trees, you can make those with Lsystem, which is a Blender plugin, and can be obtained in the top thread in python and plugins.
modron… i cant get ur trees agian… i need them…
