Alpha textures and lighting issues

Here’s my problem about alpha’s a render with a hemi light (using a model of Morrigan from MVC3):

And here’s a render with a sun light:

Any reason why alpha textures fail to work with any other light setting other than hemi?

Hemi lights don’t cast shadows. What you are seeing with the second image is the alpha texture casting a shadow onto the face. For any material that will be receiving these transparent shadows you need to enable ‘Recieve Transparent’ in their materials Shadow settings.
