Alpha threshold in Textured view?

Is there as setting to change the awful look of textures with an alpha channel in Textured view (draw type)? The big halo around the textures is really distracting: http://piclair.com/data/3r5xb.jpg

It’s always possible to set up a camera and lightning and render it each time you make a little change, but it’s quite tedious, to be be able to see your textures as they should look is kind of vital for a smooth workflow imo…

I’m using 2.49b.

I think there’s a set of buttons in the UV / edit buttons( available while in edit mode ), one of them says ‘alpha’, and after you click it( which sets it for the active face only ), select all faces and click ‘copy draw mode’.
