Alternative Hair Solution?

I’m trying to outfit a black character model with natural hair. I was thinking of making a wig of “rope-like” hair objects using bones, instead of the hair options under the Particles panel.

  1. Would it be practical to use 40-50 thin boned objects in such a way with my character model?
  2. Is there a better way to simulate the hairstyle in my sketch/photo?
