Altre Ego Short Film

So I have had this idea for a short film and I’m finally starting to work on it, so I will be posting my Progress in this thread as I go. Critiques are welcome. Just so everyone is aware, I don’t want to give out that many details online, because this is going to take a while to construct.

I am working of modeling the first character (see attached image) this is going to have lots of rigging, due to the high amount of parts. My plan is to model it in Sub components (different objects) then I will join them to its parent component once all those parts are done, eventually combining them all as one object. So my question is what is the best way to break this down? (I have pictures of each component in my list if you would like to see them) This is my break down idea:

Helmet/ Head
Chest:
Top section of the chest
Mid section of the chest (Hoses)
Abs (Belly section)
Arms:
Upper Arm
Elbow
Lower arm
Pelvis Area (Possible multiple Sub Components)
Legs:
Upper Leg
Knee
Lower Leg
Back of leg tube
Ankle and Foot

Yesterday I started to work on the helmet. Today I modeled and rigged the eyes, and I also did some tweaking to the helmet. Please let me know what you think. I need to go and re-due the ear design and model, but besides that I’m having a hard time finding what doesn’t look right.

The first two are just a rough pass with materials; it is just to see how the lighting is going to work. The 2nd two are without Materials to see how it actually looks.

Two thoughts, first, increase the lighting in the non-material renders so artifacts caused by poor modeling show up. You could search here for how to do a ‘clay’ render, those always look nice, (I forget off the top of my head how to do them, think it’s white material, no spec, AO)

Second, since it looks like a robot, I would model everything as single parts. Then you can parent all the parts of the head to the main head mesh. When rigging, then parent the main mesh, (head for example) to the head bone.

Looks interesting!!

Thanks for the advice. So my computer got a virus today and it erased the .blend file. So I will be starting all over with the helmet. I had it saved to my desktop for some stupid reason and the virus erased everything on my desktop. The virus is gone now. I think now though I am going to put the Robot on hold and start to model the sets.

Here are the finished things I have done so far. These are all done, textured and everything ready to go in a bedroom. Let me know what you think.
