AFAIK ‘freeware’ means a software which can (and MUST)
be distributed at no charge except, possibly, for the raw cost of
the disk/package/manual-printing.

Some software houses (read RedHat and Mandrake) charge more for
selling freeware linux because they add value to linux in terms of their
packaging & assistance.

freeware is not synonimous with opensource because
a freeware program can be distributed as executable only.

In any case that ineffable quality which is intellectual property
stands with the author of the software regardless of
the way of distribution.
