Am i too young to use blender? (14)

No one is too young to learn blender…for goodness a 4 year old can do it. My dad got me started when I was seven.

It just takes practice to get better

A 14 year old made this. 'nuff said.

I repeat…

Step away from the computer!

While there is still time!

Steaaaaaaaaap Awaaaaaaaaaaay Fr…

Swoooosgsgdgdgdzbzbzbzbzzzzh

Sound of me being sucked back I to the digital void…

Just love this. Spoken with elegance and choice words. A fresh view.

Usually I would hear “am I too old” or “am I too late” to start using Blender.

Supposedly starting from an early age is a good thing, but only in terms of compacting experience within a timeframe.

Too young? I would rather expect “too old” as young people of today are so much into computers and other electronic devices. And it is good to know you want to learn new things, get new skills instead of wasting time and life for nonsensical video games which is now called e-sport. These virtual objects as you call them can get you some real money as well. Continue your adventure with Blender. Look how mamy people post their work here. Not all of them work for studios.

I am with Richard on this one.
But that is undeniably because I did it like he suggested.

Sitting too much time in front of an screen makes the mind weak and the body dull / sick even - If you are truly passionate about doing art and 3D I would suggest this:
Give yourself a time limit and be strict about it - not more than so and so much hours of time spent in front of a computer per week, which means you will have to choose between either doing art or consuming media / playing video games.
Balance it with sport and exercise (ideally in nature) because sitting in front of a computer WILL mess up your posture and shoulders/upper back, staring on a smartphone is even worse as it literally fcks up your neck/spine.
You can either sacrifice your health and mental development or you sacrifice entertainment, many things in life demand a sacrifice, you can’t have everything. What’s more important to you?
You may ask yourself - what’s that nonsense with sport and exercise… there is a solid connection to creativity, the more you move your body, the more you use your muscles and the more you get grounded in physical reality and your body, the better your brain will work. All aspects of it.
The danger Richard was alluding to is getting lopsided into too much activity of the mind and neglecting your physical body.
Simple as that.

Search for a healthy balance in your life, learn about the 80/20 rule, learn how to learn properly and your life will be much more fun and exciting no matter what you do.

And to answer your initial question, you are not too young, you are in “the Valley of the Suck.”
Don’t worry - its totally normal, EVERYBODY starts there.

you are not too young. your only small disadvantage could be that you haven’t learned some stuff like trigonometry or vector maths in school yet. if you need those depends on what you are doing with blender and you also can learn it by doing…

don’t listen to old people too much! of course sitting in front of a computer the whole day is bad but maybe you can learn blender instead of gaming.

I took trigonometry and calculus in high school. Know how much of it I remember? NONE OF IT!

…so if I’m doing trig and calc in Blender, it’s only because I’m being secretly tricked into doing it.

No, it just takes time and quite a bit of perseverance. Please continue making artwork ! focus your work on specific -simple- projects rather than be all over the place, and have fun. Also show your work here !

Im gonna throw in another bit of food for thought. You are young. This is exactly when you should be trying and experiencing things. No matter where you live or what you do, or how much money you do or don’t have, as soon as you are an adult and have to worry about things like feeding a family and bills (especially electric bills, in this industry ) it becomes progressively harder and harder to just try things.

How are you supposed to know where you want to put your energy when you are an adult if you don’t take the time to experiment now while you have the luxury of time. Take the time to not just try it but for better or worse, really experience it. You don’t know what you don’t know. If you dont really seriously try things then you cant make decisions about it later in life.

Also trust me, it is better doing something you enjoy. Life is meant to be lived not survived. Do something that makes you happy. You cant seriously know what that is if you never just take the time to experience things.

Luckily we now have google to help us with maths!

I was 15 years old when I first started using Blender.

Nope. Go for it.

i also don’t remember many details but having heard of stuff like dot and cross products helps a little bit with many things.

Calculus can help with a lot when using geometry nodes, hence the reason why I actually spent a bit of time brushing up on my meager calc skills here a couple months back.

…still don’t remember all that much about it.

For everything else, there are a few times when knowing where to, say, input pi can help make a few things easier, but for the most part, you can get away with just eyeballing verts.

Hey, that is pretty good. Keep it up!

You are probably not enough experienced to accomplish a lot of things.

Nobody has infused science. Learning is a process where you need to find mentors, teachers, critics, guides to help you to understand what experience you are lacking.

It looks like you are already able to make something coherent with primitives.
You probably could have move the head of character in front to avoid to bury low part of his mask under his chest.
But you made a funny 3D character.
With few adjustments, it could be possible to make a 3D printable version of it.

If you have access to a 3D printer, things that you can imagine can easily become real objects.

Nowadays, that is not a non sense to learn 3D software. Third dimension is a complement to classic ways (drawing, writing) to share your thoughts, accessible to anybody.
