AMC Theaters; It's not possible to un-glue millennials from their phones.

So their solution is a policy that would let them whip their smartphones out and twiddle their thumbs to their heart’s content

Yes, they plan on partitioning off sections of their theaters to make them friendly to those who feel they need to text throughout the entire movie, and by extension have an uneven amount of attention to the film itself (and you think it’s crazy enough for people to walk about with their phones held to their face).

Oh my, a young person without his cellphone for two whole hours, how awful can a person be to make them do that, they need the soothing glow of that screen and they need their apps

Fortunately for us, all of the theaters here are part of a locally based chain that is genuinely concerned about giving us the best experience possible (in the first run theaters at least). Would this turn you off of visiting the theater or would it actually give incentive to go?

My local theaters don’t have a big issue with this… well, not that I’ve noticed. I don’t go to a lot of movies, especially not movies that most younger people go to. So, maybe it is there and I just haven’t seen it.

They need to just play this before every movie.

It looks like the large amount of backlash that resulted led to a complete 180 degree turn on the idea. They will continue their blanket ban on texting during the movie.

According to Wikipedia, AMC is no stranger to controversial business moves, but at least this one never had the chance to materialize.

The question is: do they want to attract “millenials,” or do they want to continue attracting anyone else?

To me, the present obsession with “constant texting,” and, by extension, “constant use of the Internet,” truly is obsessive/compulsive behavior. Yes, the Internet’s a wonderful thing, and “ain’t smart phones wunnerful,” b-u-t, it’s not the only thing in life. It’s a great way to thoroughly spoil a nice “dinner and a movie.”

I have no television in my house, and I use my cell phone as … a phone.

Yeah, and I like it that way.
