AMD RX 6800M mobile card for Blender?

Hi Community,
I’d just like to ask for your opinion on this matter. Let me please elaborate.

I try to save up for a new rig. What is sure, it needs to be a laptop, not a desktop, and I would like at least 8 gigs of VRAM (I could do an RTX 3060, with 6 gigs, but willing to spend a bit more).

So, it all narrows down to a 3070 or 3070 TI setup, or a new ASUS AMD edition with RX 6800M.

I checked all specs, and reviews and everything. For gaming only, I would go with the AMD, as it’s kinda on par with the 3070-3080 cards, and I don’t care much about ray-tracing, plus the AMD has 12 gigs of RAM, not 8, which can be useful later.
Also, the AMD setup is more than 20% cheaper for me, obviously a lot of money.

BUT, the big issue is, that Blender benchmarks are still ridiculous for this AMD card, as I found. It is at least a 5-year invest for me, and if I can’t use it for Blender, then it’s money down the drain.

Do you think Blender will support the AMD mobile card for a performance as good as a 3070 TI in about a year? I know HIP is here and all that, but I have my doubts about this

Sorry to bug the community with this, but any ideas maybe?
I recently read that the AMD mobile cards crash with HIP, even if supported, but 3.2 should have fixed it. I am also concerned about the low rendering ability. A 6800M got lower scores than an RTX 3060 mobile, which is not very good  it should be on par with a 3070 (or TI).

Do you think we will get there sometime in the near future?

In my opinion if rendering in Blender is crucial there is only one real alternative that is Nvidia. Start a 3060 and over, look up the Nvidia laptop TDP. For 3070 should look for one not below 140w.

Yeah that is my fear as well. I would like at least a 3070, but it costs much more :disappointed_relieved: for AMD, we need a miracle
Anyways, thank you so much for the input, happy blending!
