An animation based on Dupliverts and particles?

Hi everyone,
has anybody got an idea how to animate a video like the “show unborn particles” video from the following link ?

Parent Cube.001 to Subdivided Cube. In Edit mode on Cube press XSort. Activate Dupliverts. Set Unborn and Force Axii. Unclick Faces.

Hi, I wanted to ask - is there a possibility that the CUBE face would have one texture and when the particles move the one texture would be destroyed but when the particles comes togehter to whole picture-texture would be remade? I have tryed but I managed only that each particle was having a one texture.
