Animatable Text?

Does anybody know if we can animate the text on the same text object? like we can do in after effects? so that in one keyframe shows a phrase and on another frame another phrase.

If you mean something like changing the whole text between frames (like subtitles for example), you could use the Menu Switch to change between them, and expose and keyframe the menu input.

thank you. although no i didnt mean that, cause that involves extra work to connect the sockets, animate the menu switch etc.

i wanted to do it like we do it in after effects. same text box , you put a keyframe a phrase and on another keyframe other phrase and it animates it simply as that.

i tried on the string node too but it doesnt let me animate tha string text

No, the same functionality of After Effects is not possible by default in Blender, I’m sure there’s possible to create something similar with geometry nodes and/or python, but I wouldn’t know where to start tbh

yes unfortunately i tried with geo nodes to animate the string text but it doesnt let me do it

Everything can be animated in Blender, including Text objects.

Unfortunately I am not familiar with After Effects and do not understand the kind of effect you are trying to create.

Could you explain with an image or short animation?

EDIT. Do you mean that you want the words to change at specific keyframes? You don’t even need to animate the text for that. Just drop multiple texts in to the scene and set keyframes on the visibility icons in the Outliner / Properties.

Though you could do it easily enough in Python using the body property of the text’s data:

bpy.data.objects["My Text Object"].data.body = "Hello world!"

Not exactly, in this case. In After Effects you can keyframe the actual text source, so you can have different words or phrases along the timeline in the same text “object”, Blender doesn’t allow to do that kind of keyframing for text.

This is similar to my proposed solution above, just a workaround, and OP’s question was precisely to avoid having different text objects, which is cumbersome and not very fast compared to AE

After Effects is for the lazy person that wants to have everything done with a click.. Blender is for ingenious people who like to build stuff brick by brick xD

(semi-)jokes apart.. yes, sometimes Blender makes easy things difficult, but I don’t think that this is really the case: setting up a very easy geonode as the one suggested, then adding a few strings and keyframing a single parameter… it’s not so time consuming, in the end. Not as streamlined as in AE.., maybe.. but quite effective, anyway.

Meh, IDK.

Add your text. Set its words.

Duplicate it, hide the first text (click the TV & Camera icons), set the second text’s words.

Repeat until you have all your texts.

Turn off visibility for the final text, turn it back on for the first. Keyframe all their visibilities (press I over the TV & Camera icons for each one).

Now move to the first change frame, turn off the first’s visibility and keyframe.
Turn on the second’s visibility and keyframe.

Repeat for each following text.

If you parent the first text to an empty before you start then all the text objects are kept together and easily animated for position, scale, etc as well.

Sure, not as easy as in AE (dinking with the visibilities), but this is kind of how things work in Blender. And it isn’t particularly difficult nor is it the least bit taxing on Blender or memory.

If you want I could try to whip something up that’ll let you do it with a single text using data from a text-block and, uh, I’ll figure out something to keyframe it.

(Actually, I think I’ll mess with it now. Sounds fun  )

EDIT: IDK about geonodes, that seems like it’d be far more effort than it ought. Everyone keeps looking at them like they’re the solution to everything…

thank you.

if you find a way tell me :dizzy:

Basic usage of Geo Nodes is quite easy, indeed; when used seriously.. things gets a lot more complex… but they’re really very powerful. A lot of things still missing.. but.. 5.2 introduced an abundance of extremely promising things (list, recursive closure, set/get geometry bundles.. )

Honestly.. Geo Nodes (and how they CHANGED everything in Blender, see the compositor.. - that inherited a lot of stuff from GN ) have been THE game changer.

Not too hard to separate them like this, with lists, use a space in seperator.

space in here.

Hope that helps

and you can even use a “special character” as a separator and get entire phrases instead of single words.

That’s how versatile Geometry Nodes are.

Yes, you can make it really complex.

Quite easily!

wow amazing! thank you so much <3
So another thing I don’t need After Effects for anymore, haha

Maybe even easier, Id forgotton we now have a word index to play with, so you can animate words in a block of text Karaoke stylee like this…

Huh, I may have to reconsider geonode solutions. Still not sure it is a one-stop solution for everything.

I do notice some usage issues that have not been addressed. Maybe I’ll see what I can do with a little scripting to make life easy.

A Regex node would be awesome.

Heh heh heh, JSYAK, I’ve been thinking on this. Doing this in python was shockingly easy, but required about the same amount of obnoxious setup as does the geonodes version.

So I’ve been thinking on how to make it more like the AE ease-of-use trick, where you can just set your text value and drop a keyframe on the timeline and then watch it work.

Alas, that meant I had to learn to deal with Blender’s new (since 4.4) action-slot system. Boooo. Took me a while to figure it out python-wise. But I also want the finished thing to work for 3.0+, so, more versioned code (easily localized, fortunately, but…) there are quite a few caveats to making it work pretty like I just described, so, give me a day or two more and I’ll present y’all with something beautiful to use (and a horror to understand the kinds of hoops it took to work underneath, lol).

(Also, I have other stuff in life to attend to as well, so, had to take a break.)

Posting for the update and to keep the topic from auto-closing before I’m done.

alphachannel gave me the answer

i just tweaked it a bit so i can choose which sentence to appear. works like a charm

this way you can set keyframes on the “Pick phrase” option
