animated modifiers in 2.49b

I found this article about a way to animate modifier deformations. I dled the example .blend, but I’m illiterate and need someone to explain it a bit for me. I don’t know python and don’t understand what the script is doing; if someone wants to explain that to me I’d appreciate it. Ideally, if anyone can lay out a workflow for animating modifiers using this script, that would help me tons.

I realize there is a much easier way to do this in 2.5x, but I’m dreading the transition. I’ve just recently gotten good with the 2.49 UI. Is there a way to make the 2.5x UI look near-identical to the 2.49 UI, and is it simple or do I have to do it manually? Are 2.49 theme files compatible with 2.5x?

I figured this out, so for anyone else interested:

There is a script that comes with 2.49 called rvk1_torvk2.py, and is listed until the Mesh > Script menu as “Deformed mesh to Rvk”. It was created as a workaround to this problem. Read the script header for instructions on how to use it.
