Animated Painting Around Vertices

I’m in the process of creating a low poly animated short for a project. I was just brainstorming and thought a cool effect would be animated effects around each vertex. For example, there could be black circles with the radius expanding and shrinking over a period of time on each vertex. I’ve been looking at dynamic paint and thinking about keyframe scaling dynamic paint spheres at each vertex, is something like this possible? Can it be automated/optimized?
