Hello! I am absolutely loving blender after learning to use it last month. I am mostly animating projects that I have modelled in CAD and exported to Blender. A chain moves along the attachment points in the links. The links themselves don’t deform.
One way to do that is to not use deform modifiers on the links themselves, but use a helper object’s geometry to do it, and put a link on each of the faces. Helper could be an array of planes, deformed by a curve, and then use duplifaces to put the links in place.
