animating spot light

i would like to have a spotlight move over a cone object at different rates–that is fast and slow.I have done tons of homework with blender and I love it. Can i create a curve and than attach a spotlight to it and have the lamp follow the curve?–i know how to insert and use key frames but not how to change the rate of movement of an object. The purpose of this is to learn more about using lamps.

Parent the spotlamp to a curve, select “follow curve”, click on the curve, and in the IPO window, select the “paths” IPO from the drop down, and that curve will affect the position of the lamp over time along the curve. If you want the speed to be constant as it follows the path, you don’t need the IPO window at all, just set the amount of frames it will take in the curve editing panel.
