Short version: I want to create stuff like this:

But animating text in Blender is a bit challenging:
1. Fading the text in, letter by letter:
Do I accomplish this by animating the alpha of the material? So each letter must have its own material? Kill me. Is there another way
2. Masking out unwanted letters
Right now, I’m using the typewriter add-on, but this is only effective if I’m listing the letters in order, (HELLO: H, E, L, L, O). I can’t do the reverse version.
Is anybody aware of some other text-based plugins? Even the cheapo effects like the ones in iMovie, where the letters fly into position one at a time, or spin, etc.
