Animation-Driven Audio?

I’m not quite sure where to put this, so forgive me if it fits better in someplace like Materials & Texturing or somewhere.

No, not audio-driven animation, but the opposite, where the animation controls what sounds play when, and what-not.

Outside of using the BGE and logic bricks, is it possible to do something like that, by, say, linking a sound to a specific object, material or texture? That way, model collision would be used to generate the proper sound effect and timing automatically, rather than having to go in and manually place and sync each sound individually in post-production.

Is that at all possible within Blender; and if it is, how would I go about setting it up?

Yes as a game objects in surround sound too. But I don’t know how sorry.
