Any idea how to subdivide faces?

Is there anyway to subdivide individual faces with dividing the surrounding
mesh

Not directly, no. Blender tries to keep each face with a minimum of three or four vertices, so subdividing a face naturally affects neighboring faces.

It is not a very good idea to try to get around it in Blender, so what you’ll need to do is either (1) delete surrounding faces, subdivide, then rebuild with edges where you want them, or (2) subdivide, then Join and/or delete and make faces so that you have edges in the appropriate places.

Its a pain, but not too annoying.
