Anyone ever heard of Sigur Ros?

Ok, I don’t normally post things like this but…

I was reading an interview with Thom Yorke from radiohead who mentioned that Sigur Ros was his favourite band, So being the curious soul I am I decided to do a quick youtube search for them. I picked a track at random. It was haunting, almost unimaginably beautiful, and the video was sheer artistry as well. So I picked another…even better. So I picked another one, which actually moved me to tears with it’s beauty. At this point I started to realise that I wasn’t just listening to a good band, I was listening to some of the best music I’ve heard in my life. That was about an hour ago, and I’ve listened to a few more tracks and I am literally overwhelmed.

I don’t know if they are this good because of the seclusion that iceland provides, but this is so far away from the mainstream garbage we get forcefed it’s untrue. This is artistry at it’s purest, A shot of melancholic joy for the human soul, and it is music that’s as aspirational as it gets. Christ, I’m probably overselling this, but these guys are good.

Check them out for yourself, I’m posting a few links… If you don’t like them then at worst I’ll look like an idiot for bearing my soul like this on an internet forum. I can live with that.

Sigur Ros - Hljomalind

Sigur Ros Heima-Alafoss Vaka #1

Sigur Ros - Saeglopur

sigur ros - Svefn-g-englar

Sigur Ros - Heima - I Gaer

That’s enough for now, if you like them there are a lot more tracks.

Later. (and again, wow – just wow)

Ahhh, Sigur Ros. Extremely cool band. They are so far off in their own dimension of music that (besides liking it) I have no idea of what to think about it. Sigur Ros is the kind of music that when you listen to it, you just stop and think. I really should give them more play time on my Zune, I haven’t listened to them in a while goes off to find it.

I’ve tried to watch them on Youtube, but all the freeaking videos have been removed. WHich leads me to my question: why is it that the majority of videos on Youtube is removed? Is it just me? Does anyone else have that problem?

PS: Sorry for hijacking…

Oh yes. Sigur Ros is a great band. I’ve seen them on Roskilde Festival two years ago. It was one of the most amazing and haunting concerts I’ve ever seen.

Sigur Ros + Coffee + late night blender production is a great mix!

Go and buy the cd: Sigur Ros - ()

This one is the final track on the cd… Please use 10 minutes and listen to it. It has an almost Godspeed You Black Emperor feel to it…

The new album its even better than usual…more “concise”?
Only the name is even more “difficult”!

Oh man, that is beautiful, definitely now one of my favorite bands. Thanks.

Pretty much cool stuff, I enjoyed it a lot.

Don’t worry Madcow, I used to feel the same way about HIM, (Although they never made me cry). HIM used to be a really good band back in the day, now since they became more popular in the US, their music is going downhill. Get Razorblade Romance or any CD before that and you’ll see what I mean. Love Metal was OK too, the Sacrament was the best song on that CD!

Are they Beatle-good or Bob Marley - good? Or are they just good because the only music I’ve ever listened to was Radiohead, Nirvana and 50 cents? Sorry about being sarcastic… I’ll have a look at your links.

edit: OK, took a look at the links and it brings back memories of the nineties. Way back when Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Beck, Fat Boy Slim, Korn, Stone Temple Pilots, Sepeltura, 9 inch nails and the other garage rock bands/ Seattle ruled the world.

Stop and think. Maleficus nailed the description completly.

Never heard of that bad before today. I am actually really busy at this very moment, don’t have much time to lose today because I have to finish a bunch of thing. While openning firefox to search for something on google, I saw the “Anyone ever heard of Sigur Ros” thread popping out in the off-topic forum since BA is my homepage. As curious as I am, I had to check it out.

And I just lost 20minutes of my time watching these video and listenning to the music. I am totally hypnotise by them. I can’t remove my eyes from the screen, and I can’t seem to be able to start doing anything else. This is…I don’t know. Special.

.and I definitly like it.

Well, that’s almost impossible to answer, seeing as an appreciation for a particular genre of music is about as subjective as it gets. And let’s not forget that the Beatles are widely regarded as the greatest band that ever lived, so I’m not even going to go there :stuck_out_tongue:

Or are they just good because the only music I’ve ever listened to was Radiohead, Nirvana and 50 cents? Sorry about being sarcastic… I’ll have a look at your links.
I don’t understand how it would make any difference. Personally, I was raised with good music. Bands like (as mentioned above) the Beatles, the Stones, Bowie, Joy division, Pink Floyd, the pixies, pre and post punk, progressive rock, even down to obscure Chinese opera. The list is endless so I’ll stop there. Had I only listened to Radiohead Nirvana and 50 cent, I doubt it would change my perception much, since music is universal. Anyway, find out for yourself, you might think they suck.

why is it that the majority of videos on Youtube is removed? Is it just me? Does anyone else have that problem?
Nah, it’s just you. You need to find out what the problem is there.

Anyway, found a nice live performance that’s a bit more rock than the other stuff:

Sigur Ros is amazing, I loved it from the first time I heard it 2 years ago. 2 years of hard listening, and the music still hasn’t gotten old. I’ve heard the songs literally hundreds of times, but they still bring a tear to my eye.

I saw them in concert last month, it was without a doubt the single greatest experience of my life. And now, every time I listen to their music my mind goes to the concert, and it makes the music an even better experience, if such a thing is possible.

I only wish I could describe it better, everytime I try, I just sound like someone who has been drunk for a week and can’t even see straight. Ah well, I’ll just let the music speak for itself. A couple of my favorite songs:
