This a real lesson that Blender taught me, as I have seen software and software come and go (SoftImage). Companies get smacked (Pixologic). Studios disappear (Weta). In terms of OS, Win7 got toasted, Win8 went away, Win10 now is about to hit end-of-life… With all of these crazy things going on and there is no stability at all, and everything collapses, at least you would always have open source software for the rest of your life.
Weta Studios is not gone anywhere, actually they have back their software studio (Weta Digital).
Open source projects can also die so it’s nothing special about it - of course people can make forks, with closed source if e.g. ZBrush would be abandoned - it will be an abandonware, because no one would sue you for using it. Of cource I understand your point, I agree with it that open source software is more stabile than proprietary software as users we’re not affected by any price changes.
