Anyone running Samba?

Hi everybody –

I was wondering if there are any Samba gurus in the community; I’m having some problems with a Slackware 8.1 box right now. I’m running a peer to peer ethernet network with a Windows 95 box, a Windows 2000 box, and the Slackware box. I can connect to the Windows 2000 box from the Slackware box using Samba, but I can’t go the other way. Both machines can ping each other, though. The other annoying thing is I cannot connect using a NetBIOS hostname; I must specify an IP address when connecting.

Can anyone help?

Matt

you have a workgroup with no password, and all machines on that workgroup?

for windoze 9x machines you supposedly need to actually log in to connect to things, however if it connects to your 2k machine fine it ought to work

other than that, I really have no idea. I am by no means a samba guru (because I dual boot more than try to move files over the network)

i think you have a problem with your user accounts. check if your win2k user have the rights to access the folder, which is used by your share (the user must exist on the win2k box, the linux box and samba),
there is also an option in samba where you can map a bad user to a standard-account
its been a long time since i had worked with samba or linux, so excuse me if i’m wrong

ya you my need to creat a static ip address in your networking properties and if its peer to peer try getting a switch

Thanks for the help; I’ll try out what you have to say.

Matt
