I’ve been considering picking up SceneCity since it’s on sale for a little while. It looks great. I understand there are some limitations but nothing that is scaring me away for now (buildings on flat terrain only, 90 degree angle streets only…etc).
hi, as far as city gens for blender go, this is ok, It allows custom city’s with landscape & overall produces reasonable results.
There are some let downs with textures & mapping, I think thees are overcome easily, it really depends on your scene & the level of detail you want. (likely you would do the textures yourself for closeups).
For landscape shots & city skylines it’s pretty good.
I tested & worked with a few city gen guys in the 2.4x days, imo piiichan did very well getting most of the functionality to a working state.
Is it worth the money? I guess that also depends on your experience with Blender. It’s not for beginners expecting new york with cars & traffic lights & “Auto gta 3 button” (we near had that at one point ).
Customization is possible for buildings & building types only if you edit the files the program produces.
This also requires some knowledge of blender & os file structures.
Currently in blender nightly builds the whole thing is failing if you have auto run python scripts enabled.
I can help if this is issue.
Overall:
is it worth the money?
tricky question…
yes, I bought it to both support the dev & because i know the work involved, I got what i expected & some more.
no, if your expecting auto awesome city render, you won’t get it without some work, but it’s a good start.
I should also mention osm, which is for realistic mapping of actual cities.
Value for money?
That is always related to use & getting your value out of anything you purchace.
Gotcha, thanks Meta-Androcto for the honesty. And I like what you’re saying about supporting the development. That’s a good thought. I certainly don’t mind putting some work into what it generates and I’m comfortable doing so. So would you say this is really better for big “far away” scenes and not so much up close? (at least not without some manual tweaking). What about the Terrain/landscapes? Are they good for up close detail, as in having characters walking on them up close?
ok, just a heads up, if you find the created file crashes blender, make sure auto run python scripts is off, when the file is opened, in the reload trusted message (info header) choose ignore, then press run script in the text editor.
tested working recent nightly build.
Got it. Installed easily.
You can use it to quick start an environment (simple or refined) or as a base for tweaking out your own unique environment. It’s easy to learn and to use.
I’m having a blast playing around with this!
Great job Arnaud Couturier. Thanks,
Bob
I’m personally liking it so far. The mask generators are great and I will most likely use Substance Painter/Designer to build the textures with a PBR shader. The placement of the Geometry helps tremendously as a good starting point.
