append a rig or mesh no edit anymore

When I append or link a fully rigged blend file ( append group) to my empty mesh
I cannot edit it anymore?
How can I simply append only the rig from a blend file into a new mesh.

append the armature instead of the object, then create a new armature and under the link and materials buttons, under AR, choose the appended armature instead of the newly created armature. This will make the armature OBJECT, use the imported armature. This is the same as changing the mesh in an object. (it’s how to make “linked” duplicates instead of real duplicates as well)
