This is probably just a yes or no question. (And i’m just asking cause it’s nice to be able to turn down the sub-surf when i need to work faster)
i’m having trouble rigging a character with clothes. With the modifier turned off it look just fine, but when i turn it back on (just a lvl1) i distorts in different places to what appears to be because it isn’t sure what the paint for the subdivided surface would be.
Should I apply Sub-Surf modifiers before rigging? Or do you think something else may be happening?
There is a green shirt between the coat and the arm but it is being used with a Mask Modifier so there isn’t any of that in the sleeve. Just the coat and the arm.
Do not apply your sub surf!!
that is going to make painting 4 times as hard.
You should add the sub surf after the armature modifier in the stack and you don’t even need to display it in the 3d window if it’s slowing your computer down. (But you should also know that activating the mask in the 3d view will also slow things down)
if your armature is in it’s rest position then it won’t be pulling on any of the verts.
but maybe you have some verts painted to an incorrect bone (eg - the opposite arm)
are all the bones in rest position?
to test if it’s an armature problem, leave the sub surf activated like the second picture - then disable the armature modifier
if everything snaps back to where is should be then it is something to do with your weight painting
if nothing moves - check something else in your modifier stack
