apply texture for .x

I have a finished model with a uv maped texture that I want to export to an .x file
when I export it the texture doesnt work

I read in another post that applying a texture as a material doesnt work for .x files
it suggested that there was another way of applying uv textures that will work but
stoped short of explaning how

how do I apply a uv texture so it can be exported as an .x file?

Does your texture filename appear in the exported .X file? Im been trying to do this with no luck. I have unwrapped it and textured it in blender and included the texture file in the same directory when I exported it. But when I load my .x file into my game engine I have to load the texture seperately to see it.
