Applying FX to a specific layer?

hey i’m blender noob so sry if this is a simple question .im currently using Blender with the Octane plugin.

I’ve been studying the movie Into the Spider Verse lately because the aesthetic is Godly as we all know. I noticed that they use alot of Chromatic Abberation effects in the background of scenes while the characters themselves sometimes do not have any chromatic aberration effects on them in that same shot.

for example Screen Shot 2020-05-28 at 4.15.43 AM

This opened my mind to using layers and applying fx on only specific layers. For example : say I have a animated shot with a character walking in the forest and all of the trees are on one layer and the character is on another layer, and I wanted to make the trees glitch while the character does not.

In octane blender how would I go about exporting my whole animated scene in layers ? ( or whatever way is best ) so I can apply in post an effect to a specific layer in the background and overlay the character In a separate layer so he does not get affected by the effect I applied?

I know I can just export the animation as a whole and mask out whatever part I dont want to be affected but that process is too tedious / 2 dimensional :-1:.

There has to be an easier way to achieve this using octane blender but im stumped. I’ve been trying to figure this out all day >_<

shadow’s on the mesh makes this even more confusing.
please help lol

after 3 stressful days of lurking the internet I figured it out !!!

In case anyone is curious on this as well the answer is to use the software Katana for compositing

or regular compositor in general i think. i just learned about compositing yesterday which lead me to discovering katana and nuke

Well, there were other options that only use Blender … but they involve the use of nodes.

Modern versions of Blender use “nodes” in lots of places now, and their use continues to grow.

I see. thanks for your reply. I still have alot to learn but in order to achieve this were you referring to nodes in the compositor or the shader editor ? I want to be able to apply a chroma aberration effect to everything in the scene besides on specific object
