Hello all,
I need to have advice on finding jobs using blender. i find it truly hard to find job as an archviz artist as mostly requires 3ds max so i was wondering what are some studios that uses blender as their main software or what are some websites that i can try freelancing i tried upwork and have not been successful i need to find a remotely job using blender
Hello !
I fear you might need to lower a bit your expectations, you’ll probably have to choose between working with blender, working remote and correct wage. Probably start to sort them in order of preference ![]()
You might manage to find a studio that have the 3 but from experience it’s hard to find, I work more on animation rather than arch-viz so I might be biased, at least in animation you need to be very lucky…
You have good skills which is already a very good start, you can probably adapt quickly to max and maybe find a studio in your city ?
I don’t know for arch-viz but most of the website that offers services for making logo , animation and such generally offer very low wages for what it is. On top of that , while I can understand that if I need a logo for my brand new bakery using online services can be an option, on the other hand I probably won’t use these services for a building project or even an interior design.
These arch-viz projects cost a lot mainly because of the iterations they need, and probably client are ok to pay more to make sure people they work with are reliable. At least that’s the kind of experience I got when working on product rendering / advertising which is probably a bit similar.
As a client you might feel reassured to be able to call people at 9PM for a last minute change for tomorrow if there is something urgent. (Clients have clients too
)
Last piece of advice I can give is that finding your first jobs can take some time. I spend a few years finding nothing but if you keep working on your portfolio and given some time you’ll eventually meet the right people. I think it’s really a business where you need to be patient since there is a lot of competition among beginners.
Everyone can download blender and learn tutorials, of course that lead to very different levels, but finding good “beginners” is relatively easy. The more experience you make , the more likely you’ll be able to stand out from that crowd !
And once you start to work since you have experience it get much easier to find new jobs !
In my field at least, finding junior artists is quite easy, finding experienced CG supervisor or good technical artists is quite difficult, even with Maya, and needless to say with blender.
Good luck !
Blender is more than capable to do archviz, but Max is more or less standard in this “industry”.
There are reasons, some disputable, some justified. However, even if you get remote job and can work in software of your choice, I recommend to you to get familiar with Max, even get indie version.
If you collaborate with other people, you will often get files in Max format. Even if studio is willing to waste time to convert files to fbx. just for you…you will get mess. Really mess. Max users are very, very sloppy when export stuff from Max. Also, they demand that someone send them files in Max format. Why they will waste time and resources to conversion…
Imagine that Max is foreign language. Knowing one more Big language will increase your “market value”. Nothing more, nothing less.
Truth is that I have seen from very serious and major architecture firms, most of the time they are very strict and opinionated and they go for full Autodesk. Though there can be demand for Blender as well (though I am not sure how much – but truth is that you can’t pretend to beat Autodesk on their game – since they are well established over many decades in that place).
About 3D environments, for game engines? Typically you can use either Unreal and Unity, to be able to populate scenes with assets as such, then the other gameplay elements will be placed by game designers, so you won’t have to bother at all with game development, just work on the graphics side of things. In this type of work, actually it won’t make any difference to the client how the assets were created, if they are exported as USD and they look OK, this means that you can use Blender freely.
I already work in a studio in my city and i use blender there as i’ve freedom to use whatever software i’m most capable the most important thing is the quality of the product and i’ve been providing it with my tasks but if it is so rare to find this freedoom so i cant just find another job with the same environment. although my personal life responsibilities have been growing this past months and specially because our currency’s value is descending and connected to USD value so i need an extra job for more income.
i’ve been having some freelances here and their but i need to establish myself more international wise not just in my city
Yes, i agree that max users are sloppy in their work unless they get exposure to some level of optimization like game engines. i have 3ds max as i need to use alot of max files and work with other people who uses max but i just prefer to use blender specially in 3D modeling and texturing it is much better than max or maybe just more convenient to my preference.
I think there are many established blender users who earn income using blender in this forums and i wanted to ask more about their experience in that regards.
Gotcha !
That depends every company got their ways of working, in general people want everyone on the company to work with the same software so it’s easier to jump in past works and share work between different people.
If you start freelancing and your clients are satisfied then with time they’ll probably bring you more works. But yeah it can take a bit of time before it becomes regular.
Good luck !
Thank you
i really appreciate the time you took for replying
Fun stuff. On one C4D forum one dude ask is worthy to switch from Blender to cinema for archviz.
Well, people answer that although cinema is capable for archviz and people use it… it’s much more convenient to use Max. Yap, even “hard core” cinema users say that.
So, it’s simple for you. In your bio mention that you use Max and Blender.
One more thing. You will get CAD files, mostly Autodesk software. For some reason Max has good communication with Autodesk CAD software which are also “industry standard”. Much better than other software… pure coincidence I guess ![]()
And not only that Max will more easily read these files, but he will also much easier untangle tangled files. I see on my art forum really crazy Autocad files. Maybe good as abstract art, but if you must use it as plan, you are screwed.
