I’m making a First Person Shooter game, and I’m making the models using Blender, I’ve done most of the weapons and I’ve done a good few levels, but I’m having problems with making a character model for my character and the enemies.
I want to do low-poly characters, and by low-poly, I mean Really low-poly, like the kind you’ll see on a PS1 or an N64 game.
I’ve seen a few base models, but I’m scared that I wouldn’t be allowed to use them for a game I’m going to publish and sell, it feels much nicer to make my own anyway. I’ve tried making my models based on them, but I didn’t do a great job at that either.
I’d suggest you look into any box-modeling tuts. Google or BlenderCookie. Remember, any model can be made as simple as you need it to be - just because something is created at a higher resolution doesn’t mean you can’t change it to a more simple mesh with some work. Just remember whatever mesh you create must be complex enough to work with your armature or other forms of deformation. It’s possible to build a character out of just a very few faces (years ago there was a contest of the lowest number of faces necessary to create a recognizable character, and the winning entry was amazingly small - under 20 faces, I think) - but with that many faces, you won’t be able to do anything but the most simple stick-figure movements.
I fixed the problem, you can take any old model, clone it, use the decimate modifier, and if you have any textures, bake them into the new low-poly model, works a charm!
