I’m working on my rig still and another problem I encountered is the shoulder and sleeve. I cant get it to work properly. I tried looking at the game to see how it looks but I cant get it to match.
Your post history looks like you’re having fundamental issues with how to approach various things, as you go from step to step in each stage of your character process.
I suggest you spend some time with a training series, and see what areas you may need to learn a bit more about. Each chapter has a specific focus, so you shouldn’t find it too hard to quickly skip a lesson that you know you need no assistance with.
What exactly is it that it’s not doing right? I mean, I understand that it’s not doing what you want, but what specifically is it that’s wrong?
If it were my project, I’d probably try removing some of the arm bone influence from the lower half of the sleeve hole, since it doesn’t look like that part follows the arm as closely as you have it doing in your screenshot, but:
Your references suggest that something in the shoulder area specifically is bothering you, but I can’t figure out exactly what that is. Are you not getting those folds that the reference has?
In the screenshots if you compare the game and mine it’s the sleeve. When the arms go up it stretches nicely. But mine doesnt move as far and it instead clips and it also just looks unnatural for clothes. It doesnt shrink like that. I’m trying to get the game to match how it looks in the game, or at the very least look close enough. The right arm almost got it but the shoulder is clipping. I dont even know what I did differently.
I think part of the problem is that your rig is in an anatomically impossible pose.
In real life, the arm bone cannot raise past horizontal. If you raise your arm any higher than that, the rest of the movement is done by the shoulder bone. It looks like your rig lacks a proper shoulder bone? Is the bone I am seeing connected in a way that you can rotate it?
Also this is going to be a challenge for you. Where this model is going i’m limited to how many vertex groups I can have for one vert and the rig is limited to what’s there. The shoulder and arm bone is all I have to work with. So it wont be like your average model with help bones etc etc
then how do we put our arms over our head? Also im just copying what the game does. My character doesnt move the shoulders and just raises the arms over his head. So i’m just matching the rig how it is when I got it and where they should be
I had to move the shoulder bone a bit to be able to do it, and even then the weights aren’t adjusted for it. From an anatomy perspective, this rig is actually incorrect.
Anyway, if the original managed to do such a nice deformation with weights only, I don’t know how they did it. I would probably create a corrective shape key.
Well I made a discovery. I got curious to see how the arms pose without a shirt on so I went in and removed my shirt and took a close look. Turns out the parts above the shoulder go down which explains why that area doesnt clip through the sleeves in the game https://imgur.com/LciUAjp
Looks like they may have done it in a particular way that’s not necessarily realistic to better fit the art style. Usually, I would use weight transfer to rig clothes, it tends to work better than redoing the weights separately. No idea what it would do here though.
Yeah realistic isn’t really applied here. One thing I did notice is that they still move in a somewhat realistic way. Like when they punch forward the upper region of the torso rotates forward with the arm instead of just the arm and shoulder going forward. So it somewhat keeps it real with how the body would move. But in this case since it’s a 3D model they gotta do something to make it work.
But at least now I have a decent idea how to do it. I’m only worried that itll cause problems with other poses due to the extra weight
I could get rid of the clipping in arms raised pose with some weight painting on both the shirt and the character. I didn’t notice any major problems with the character in other poses, but didn’t get the shirt to not clip.
But either way, it sounds like you’ve got an idea, so best of luck .
When I say something like that, it means “I’ve got a handle on this, I don’t need any more help at the moment.”
I didn’t link the file I was working on so you could take a look because it crashed before I could save and didn’t kick into the auto save properly. I didn’t mention that issue because again, to me “I have a decent idea how to do this” means “I know what I’m doing now.” so it didn’t seem necessary. But since you had expressed concern about weight painting on the character messing up other poses I thought I would mention that I didn’t notice a significant issue in my own experiments.
And if people wishing you luck offends you, by all means and without any sarcasm or ill will, I will do my absolute best never to do it again.
If you still want help I’ll try to recreate what I had working tomorrow.
I had a decent idea as in I had a better idea how to fix the clipping. But I unfortunately failed (again). It still looks nothing like it does in the game. I dont know how they rigged it and I can’t get the arm or the sleeve to pose how I want it. Constantly clipping and going through the body.
I just can’t do it on my own. It’s impossible. I tried everything
