so i decided to do a little project and make a little guy or something, but im having some trouble with the armatures.

I add a modifier on the guy, weight paint some vertices and such, but when i move a bone, some of the vertices stick out like spikes while others movie with ease, and i get these spikes pointing out of the joint, how do i smooth it out?

the hard way: double-check your weight painting for each bone. this happens when a vertex is affected by a bone that you accidentally painted when you selected the bone… it gets nightmarish if you have so many bones, because you have to check each and every bone to get to the one that’s causing the problem…

the easy way:
redo the whole weight assignments… do NOT use weight painting… choose individual vertices, create a vertex group with the same name as the bone, and assign it a weight value…
do this for other bones…
while this method takes more time, it is guaranteed to work and it saves you a lot of time and headaches to figure out and solve problems like the one you have… you can then use weight paint (carefully) to fine tune the weight assignments…

this is my approach and you’ll find others that don’t agree with it… so take it with a grain of salt.

If you have envelopes turned on, turn them off.

pose each bone in pose mode so that the spikes of mesh are sticking out, then go into weight paint mode on the object and paint the spikes to a bone.

It’s also helpful to have a lower detailed character with a subsurf modifier. Make sure your subsurf modifier comes after your armature modifier.
