Armature not moving like Cmu Bvh mocap files does

Oh great blender Gurus, please help as I am very stumped. I made a make human character and tried every you tube and forum I can find. But It is impossible to make this character simply walk. I got it all down to re targeting the boneswalk 1.bvh (420.6 KB)
from the performer to the model’s skeleton. But the model skeleton deforms when I hit re target. Is there any way I can “give this creation life?” I just want the model to walk on the grid. That’s it. Please tell me how (possibly with pics.).

Here’s the model and the bvh file I am using. Please help and good luck.

“Help me obi wan kenobi, you’re my only hope”

I’m no Guru, but to start with apply your mesh transforms then your armature transforms on your mesh and your end user rig or you will have problems down the road potentially using Blender. Don’t map your thigh.r bone to your left up leg bone, map it to Righlupleg bone… Really confuses things. Position your hip bones on your armature to match the mocap bones or your orientations will be all screwed up.Click advanced and then retarget and that will give you a start.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
I just need it to walk and the mesh to walk too, that’s all. You did it all except make the model do what the armature does. Please tell / show me how to do that. It would mean the world to me. Again, thank you!!!

It’s called skinning. You will need to assign vertex groups to the mesh and then do weight painting.
You can try parenting the mesh to the armature with automatic weights, but you will need to do some major weight painting to get the mesh to deform. This is rigify, but the principles will work with any rig.

Thank you.

Yeah. I got it to work. You need to skin your mesh (as mentioned above by clicking on your armature, then on your mesh and hitting ctrl & p) and then use the makewalk util from makehuman. It loads and retargets better than the manual way for this rig.

Good to know thank you. Can you please send me the file? It would help me better understand if there’s anything else to do with it.

Sure,
I did this very very quickly and the eyes and teeth weren’t merged with the mesh. So you’ll need to fix that. If you want to make it walk on the spot, you will need to go into a program called bvhacker and lock the spine before re-targeting in Blender. Don’t forget to view some tutorials on skinning as well.

edit

Hi, I had another look at this one and the model was a bit too detailed for my liking and I don’t want to be responsible for younger people accessing this. The file has been deleted. There are plenty of tutorials that one can and should work through to learn these techniques.

Thank you!

Thanks all for all your help, it means a lot and works! But why is the hair moving through the mesh when it walks?

Hey stilltrying, I tried yours out and a lot of the vertex groups are not assigned. Which is what i’m working on. I was wondering why when I try to zoom in and out everything shifts down until the model becomes invisable. can you tell me how to undo that? It used to simply zoom in and out and now it does not do that anymore. I am using blender 2.79 ( I never use nightly builds.) mawbye it has something to do with the zoom functions. If you can tell me how to fix that, mabye I can make this work. Please help.

I tried a different path, I cleared all vertex groups, parented the mesh to the armature inside the mesh. and the mo cap armature moved just fine. The mesh and other armature did not move. The mo cap armature moved right off the floor plane. And it’s all moving now at 0.48 fps. Can one of you, or anyone please make it move perfectly and please tell me how the heck did you do it? Nothing seems to be working right and now the controls are wonky. Please just make it walk and upload a video of how you made it happened. With screen cast keys. Please. Nothing is working.

Nevermind guys, I found a solution. Thank you all for your help. It really got me thinking and I got help elsewhere, here’s the link in case anyone gets the same problem. -> http://www.makehumancommunity.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=16106
