Armature parenting - hard question or noobish one?

I’ve been lurking for a while but found no answer.
Is there any way to make an armature be the child of a mesh but, at the same time, its parent, so it does actually control the mesh form but not its location, so the armature follows the mesh? I’m about to make a robot into BGE, and use the Physics engine to try some stuff.

Surely it’s completely newbish, but I’ve got no idea what to do right now.

I don’t understand why you want to do this…? What are you wanting to accomplish by having the armature control the mesh but not be at the same location? There may be a better way of accomplishing what you want besides changing the parenting.
