I am new to the 3D rendering world. I am in my second month of the Bachelors Computer Animation Program at Full Sail University and I was introduced to Blender to get a feel for it before we start using Maya in our courses. I got as far as modeling and creating an armature but after I parented the armature to the mesh I ran into some problems.
I move the right side in pose mode and both sides of the mesh move.
In attempting to move the left side just the armature moves without the mesh.
I don’t know what I did wrong.
I would like to be able to move each side separate from each other with the armature attached.
I know I created part of the armature with the mirror modifier and I’m not sure if that is what is causing my problems or not. I have tried reading on it starting over and attempting it again but it continues to happen. If anyone could help me figure out how to fix this, it would be SO greatly appreciated so I can move onto learning some more! thanks!!!
It always helps to have a .blend file to try to figure these things out. What version of blender are you using? You mentioned using the mirror modifier on the armature, you can’t, blender won’t let you, you probably used the x-axis mirror option to create a symmetrical armature, which is fine, that’s what it’s there for and wouldn’t affect anything.
Did you use the mirror modifier on the mesh? If so, I hope you haven’t applied it yet. By default the mirror modifier should mirror your vertex groups, so check that option and see if it’s turned on. If you have applied the mirror modifier, then check to see if you symmetrical vertex groups. Vertex groups are found in the object data panel in 2.5, in 2.49 it’s in the editing panel, under links & materials. For every bone deforming the mesh, there should be a vertex group for it. If you have an UpperArm_L bone, then you should have an UpperArm_R bone and vertex groups for UpperArm_L & UpperArm_R. You can also select the name of a vertex group and in edit mode hit the select button to view what parts of the mesh are affected by them. More info here. I suspect this is the problem.
