Array around an icosphere

Hi all,

I came across this blend file on blendswap ( http://www.blendswap.com/blends/view/975 ). It is a mace model–it seems to use some kind of an array to place a “spike” (cones) on each face of the icosphere.

I’ve been trying to scan through the file to find out what function/modifier this model uses, but I can’t seem to find out how to mimic this effect.

Does anyone know what feature this uses?

(image below shows the array dragged to the right, away from the sphere.)

The method employed is procedural duplication, or more specifically, duplifaces.

Look at this screenshot:

A cone, which is a spike, is parented to a sphere. And this sphere has Faces turned on in Duplication panel. This means that an instance of that cone is placed at each face of the sphere.

A great tutorial to show how duplifaces or dupliverts works is this one from BlenderNerd:

Thanks Stan and jblender,

I’ve played around with it a bit. Very useful. It’s always exciting to discover new tools in Blender
