Asimov's Multivac [CC Needed]

Hi! New to BlenderArtists so I hope I’m posting in the right place.

I am struggling with developing the realism of the computer and desk. The computer uses a detailed plastic shader (which looks great in HDRi lighting), but looks very fake in the scene lighting. What can I do to increase the realism of the computer? I am having a similar problem with the desk looking unsatisfactory as well.

All criticisms/comments are welcome! (Any suggestions regarding other components of the piece also welcome!)

Welcome to BA!
Regarding the table I’d suggest a bit of beveling on the edges would help. They look razor sharp at the moment.
I think your lighting makes your materials a disservice. How does a close up of the computer under HDRI lighting look?
Cheers! :beers:

Thank you for your suggestions! I’ll add the bevel modifier and work on the lighting further.

The material looks very flat, mess with the spec and hardness values a bit? and a Glass Material for the screen should work wonders. good job so far

  1. scale of the keyboard seems bigger then usual (also the rest of the computer seems off somehow, maybe a reference photo model would help)
  2. the desk`s sides are thicker then they should, usualy a wooden board is around 2-3 cm, yours seems much bigger.
  3. the books seem to be an .fbx import with smooth shading gone wrong, add an edge split modifier on it and some color/texture.
  4. change the lighting direction, you have no shadows on the desk and details like handdles seem to float arownd.

Overall the scene is a good beging for something interesting. Keep blending!!

I would push the ends of the cables in the top left off the edge of the camera view - right now they look like they are just floating there and don’t belong. Either use some mist or something so the ends subtly disappear or push the ends right off the edge of the picture.

The computer screen would be throwing light onto the desk, which is missing here.

Remember blender has a compositor… you can render to layers which means you can render the desk under HDRI and comp it with your background stuff. The cables on the floor in the fore ground seem awfully thick, id reduce that a bit.

Thank you for all this advice! I’m working on implementing the changes now!
