IMO you should create a proxy like a cube to drop your material onto, then with your original object, go into the materials panel, add a new material slot, then in edit mode assign the faces you want to have that material to that slot, then choose the material you want from the dropdown list.
It’d occurred to me to do that but it wasn’t working.
Realize I was doing it the wrong way after seeing your suggestion.
Has to be dragged onto a New Material one has created.
