Astronomical Animation Render Times

I’m trying to animate something fairly simple: A black foreground with some big text cut out of it, with a scrolling image behind the cut out text, possibly lit up. It’s basically 2D. The scrolling image needs to take 15 minutes to scroll fully from left to right. Blender is telling me that it’s going to take over 8 hours to render this, with Blender Render. This can’t be right, can it? I can’t think of other ways to set up the project to get the render time down, and I can’t figure out how to do it in cycles. Why is the render time so high?

Ill try and help you with your space-based animation problem!

Seems simple enough

Well if its saying that its taking that long then yes it can be.

> I can’t think of other ways to set up the project to get the render time down,

Thats why you are posting here, to get our input…

> and I can’t figure out how to do it in cycles. Why is the render time so high?

If its 15 minutes and it says its going to take 8 hours, ill assume 24fps, that means there are 21600 frames all up. that means in 28800 seconds (8 hours in seconds) it will process 21600 frames… which means it will take 1.3333333 seconds per frame. Which is pretty fast, but probably we can probably speed it up a bit, but that would mean you need to upload your blend file for us to be able ot diagnose how to make it faster. But even after that we may be able to shave another 10-15% off it,so it would be about 6-7hours instead.

I got a scene in cycles and for around 1 minutes anim it would tale like 100 hours to render
with about 2 minutes per frame

so 8 hours is not that long for a render for anim 15 minutes

I can get it down to about 2 seconds per frame, but that still seems like a lot for basically rendering a PNG behind a PNG with transparent text. Is there some other way to set it up other than UV mapping the PNG with text onto a plane, and the long scrolling photo UV mapped to another plane behind it?

Is there some other entirely different program I should be using to do this instead, that won’t take 6-8 hours?

depends also on the resolution In cycles
you can set like simplify
check out the caustic

that should minimize render time
but still have to be careful with the noise level in render
may be try using clamp

I can’t figure out how to do it in cycles.

What I need:

  • 1920 x 1080 plane, black, text in middle, text is cut out, camera zoomed in full screen on this
  • 9600 x 1080 plane, behind first plane, has scrolling image on it, possibly backlit

The long plane just needs to slide behind the text for 15 minutes. How do I set this up in cycles? And should this really take 8 hours?

same anim then in Bl !
just materials are different

what is this - 9600 x 1080 plane ?

another trick here
set your camera DOF to minimize the camera view
so it does not render too many things outside the camera view

thanks

The 9600 x 1080 plane is a scrolling panel that goes behind the text. This animation is for a sort of music video with 5 songs, and a different picture for each song. I compiled them all into one image and this is supposed to scroll behind another plane with cut out text.

Where is the option to only render what the camera is looking at?

that is in the Ligthpath node

can you use open GL instead which is way faster ?
mind you do loose some res but might work

I’m not using cycles, I have it set up in Blender render and when I switch it to cycles it doesn’t work. I don’t know how to set up cut out text or load an image onto a mesh in cycles.

I have an Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan Black so I should be able to use that but how can I be sure that’s what Blender is using?

I think you have to select it in the user preferences I mean the GPU

but on GPU it should be faster anyway

Open GL can be use in BL too or cycles

did u try it in Bl and see how fast it goes for a 100 frames and take time to render ?
and if quality is good enough !

forgot you need to redo the materials in cycles for this to work !

and are you on 2.78 ?

also on GPU it should be much faster !
5 to 10 times I guess
