ok, so this may be dumb question since I know little about this but…
I found this website that had a huge selection of full length songs free for download. I didn’t believe it at first when my friend told me about it. I knew there had to be a catch. I went to the site, and sure enough, there was a huge selection of songs avalible for download.
But, they were not MP3s or WMAs. There file extension was .asx. I have never seen this format before and I am wondering if it can be converted to .mp3. More then likely it cannot though. Just wondering.
iirc asx is an older streaming windows media format, once you’ve downloaded the real file [depending on the player, that might never happen] you can then re-encode as whatever you want.
Either you were using an old version or I’m doing something different cause I usually get speeds of 6x and more. And I believe you have a much better comp than I do.

Db is not free software, the downloadable version is a cut back version of their pro version.
it was taking me 30-55 mins to rip a cd to FLAC from Dbpoweramp at -8 setting. i switched to Cdex and it takes only 5 mins per cd.
unless Dbpoweramp has recently made itself “fully free” i shall never use it again. there are better alternatives.
BTW 5x speed is a huge throttle also. you should expect about 40x for MP3 and 20x for a harder codec to rip to like FLAC.
i have tried a good number of ripping programs and codecs and i must say that Cdex is my personal favorite. and i have ripped about 40 discs with Dbpoweramp before realising it was throttled, and before finding Cdex (after i couldn’t get EAC to work with my drives)

That’s the catch, I don’t use it to rip CD, I just use it to lower the bitrate of MP3 so they’d take less space on my 128 MB MP3 player.
What I like about Dbpoweramp is how welll it integrate itself in the context menu. Quick and easy conversion.
as for free downloadable music there are the comon knowledge like magnatune…
my favorite idea is to go to the artists websites, they often contain MP3’s of their own music. many artists do it. pity that about 64Kbps is all you will get, some offer more.
theeth. yeah the context menu of Dbpoweramp was one thing that impressed me. and a small edit i meant to write i have ripped about 40 CDs with it not 0 LOL.
but yeah i must admit i have never tested converting from format to format with it.
