With all these ‘beginner’ engines with features that add vehicle physics and even player controls with the click of a button, at what point are we no longer creating the game? The two extremes, as I see them would be making your computer from scratch, coding everything your own way, etc, and on the other hand having a program with a ‘create game’ button. So, what separates the artist from just someone clicking buttons??? (when has the engine developer created more of the game than the artist?)
I agree, though I (hope) that if these ‘make me a game button’ games are being released, a true game by someone who has worked their socks off will shine through.
Well, obviously, clicking the “create a game” button would mark that point. Everything else could be categorized as either a mod, demo or an entirely new game on it’s own.
Needles to say: the game culture problems relating to the non-existent “create a game” button are not much of a concern for me.
Although it is an interesting topic, especially if we’re talking about how this “create a game” button could work. I mean, assuming that we’re not talking about a system that could read minds, there would have to be an additional group of parameters that you would have to define prior to clicking the almighty button. And then, even if we disregard all the details relating to the game logic; how exactly would that program determine which models, textures, sounds to create? Or maybe one of the parameters would be the inclusion of pre-made assets to which random logic would be appended?
Hmm, interesting :eyebrowlift:
Social, have you check the ‘3D GameMaker’ from the people behind DarkBasic, it has a ‘create a game’ button, literally, for 100 bucks you can click your own games together or click the random game button.
There are limitations though, it’s not an all-genre gamemaking package, and the levels, customization, and logic possible isn’t even close to what can be done in the BGE.
No matter what happens, the people who spend their time and work hard will triumph over the “Create Game” button, no amount of buttons or clever parameters can beat the human mind in creativity
Lets say, somebody can make a for the BGE a vehicle physics, which is equal to the Colin McRae Rally simulation.
If somebody is using this ‘beginner’ engine, the game is automatically labeled as a ‘One click wonder’ in your book?
Lets dump this stupid ‘beginner’ engine, known as a Bullet physics, in 2.5 release, ok?
An interesting game can be made with any tool. Using a tool that needs more sweat from the developer and leaves him less time for being creative is a plain stupid idea. Being proud on doing everything by hand is ridiculous (“Look, mum, no textures, only procedurals” is something similar heard sometimes here around).
There are a lot of things that are not individual for a game (or any other product). Using the right tools is part of the developement process, and not an unimportant one.
Maybe its is the site name, which is attracting the self promoted ‘Artists’ .
The way I see it, if you create a game using logic bricks or the “make a game” button, then you can’t be credited for making the game because all the code is written by the BF developers.
I don’t like these either, but try making a game without them.
Well you have it right there, the buttons and clever parameters will be made by the human mind in all of its creative glory. XD
YOU start the topic and made a question.
So, do you have a GUTS to answer or are you running like a mouse?
