Attack ship off the Shoulder of Orion

This is my first post on Blender Artists. I am relatively new to Blender, and I have been looking for feedback on some of my recent work. Here is a render called “Attack ships off the Shoulder of Orion.” You can only guess where that came from ;).

Does the ship look too clean and new?

As you have been so incredibly helpful to me in my space scene, I thought I would try and return the favor for you.

My first feeling is that I am struggling to imagine the scale of what I am looking at. At first I thought the ship was very big and the bit on top was like a bridge with windows, however, then looking at the guns at the front these would be huge if that was true. If I am trying to imagine a person or multiple people piloting it I can’t quite grasp where they would be and how big they would be in comparison to the ship. You might want to find a way of adding some indicator as to the scale (windows are one option).

I like the planet/asteroid in the background. but I feel like I can see too much detail and it is a bit too shiny which makes it look like it is really close to the camera (which is in-congruent with the ship speeding away from it in the distance).

The ship generally is a little bit basic in terms of shape and textures. This is especially obvious on the right wing where you can see that it is a very flat/angular shape with no real texture (which always detracts from how real things look). Perhaps try adding some more geometry to make this look less basic. You could even just use a bump map or similar to add some more detail to the surface to make it look like the ship is made up of panels or components.

I really like the lights on the ship and the sunbeam/bokeh you have used. I think that gives it a real sci-fi type feeling.

Great stuff though, huge potential. Just my personal opinions anyway, I can’t claim to be any kind of expert!

To tell you the truth, I myself am not really sure about the scale now that I think about it!
Originally I thought it would be quite large, and that the top was like a bridge. But then I had some small-fight-ship-space-scene inspiration (ok, to be fair it was The Force Awakens). I started thinking of it more as a smaller fighter ship like an x wing or tie fighter. However, I still was drawn to the starship idea too. Anyway, my point is I agree I need to change the scale or make the scale clearer.
In terms of the planet surface: it is totally procedurally generated, and I wanted most of it to be solid gold. But I agree it is very shiny. Not quite sure what to do with that.
Totally agree about the ship textures. What kind of bump map do you think would work?
