Attempt at Realism

This is my first real attempt at realism. I followed a tutorial at CGtalk, and I’m really glad with the results, but I’m wondering if anybody can offer any more advice on this one. See anything that I can do to make this baby come to life? yeah, it is just a metal plate floating in empty space, but any advice is appreciated! Thanks a lot!

Edit: Rendered in Blender Internal

I’ve been wanting to do that tutorial for a long time… total PS noob though.

No real focused critique, aside from the obvious put it in a nice scene, a sci fi or industrial scene. Great work

Thanks BleedForMe. I’ve been meaning to get to work on a scene for this. Maybe turn the plane into a box and add some wacky machines or tools or something. I’m a grade A noob when it comes to PS too! If what was written in the tutorial got confusing though, theres a link at the bottom of the tut to a more detailed article explaining the same tutorial. You should give it a shot! I learned a ton from it

The object itself is looking really nice  only real observation I’ve got is that as a whole it looks a little flat (thin might be a better word) at the extremes. It might just be ‘floating object’ syndrome but you could try rendering it with a floor plane beneath set to OnlyShadow to give the scene as a whole some more depth to it.

Also would appreciate a link to the tutorial you mention if ya could!

the only things that look flat really kind of are the green L-shape plates. Maybe you can extrude them a bit and perhaps at some bevel on the edges so they pick up a specular. Also with the bolts holding them down, maybe had more depth to those.

P.S. I’m still a noob at blender so sorry if I make an ignorant statement.

Thanks for the advice guys!

@James_Ross, I don’t really understand what you mean. I tried adding a floor plane, and I turned onlyshadow on, but that just made it invisible. Is there something else I need to do? The link to the tutorial is: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=373024
And the detailed magazine article version is at the bottom of the second post. Click on the picture of the magazine.

@Some Funky Dude, you didn’t make any ignorant comments! I really like your bevel idea. I completely forgot to add that when I was modeling it. That would’ve helped me out a lot with the specular and getting some extra shine to the scratches on the edge. And the bolts actually don’t exist. They’re just holes in the mesh.
