Hello everybody, i’m new to this forum and a pretty new at modeling things in blender, so be harm;)
To the project, this friday I thought “Let’s model a car, that would be fun!” and on that way it is, I started to model an Audi A5:) I started with a plane and extuded it (don’t know what the technique is called) and put a blueprint as bakground image, this is what i’ve done so far, please comment and give critics:)

Rear: http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm117/jl-creations/wipbak.jpg
Wireframe (without the ugly blue bakground:)) :http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm117/jl-creations/wire.jpg
somehow the wire seems to be clean but the renders do not!
Press ‘Set Smooth’, please.
Also you can change the render background by pressing F5 and the globe button(hover mouse over and it’ll say: ‘World buttons’).
As for the model: Apart from the odd bulge in the middle rear part of roof I don’t see any bigger problems.
What is not “clean” with the render?
- Smooth - check
- Bakground color - check
- Roof - checkThank you both for the comments, see the updated render and please comment more:D

Here is a small update on the model, but because it’s not weekend now I don’t have the time to work on it as much as I would like too… What i’ve done exept for for bug fixing is mainly the grill, don’t now if I really like the way it came out, please tell me what you think
Smooth and roof fixed Weraser
All old links are now dead…

Rear: http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm117/jl-creations/Blender/Audi%20A5/rear.jpg
Please keep comment
ps. forgot to say that I merged all the parts together again and now the door is the only part that is a loose part, please tell me which way that is the smartest to make door seams and such things
Some progress and rims, will give 3d tyres and brakes a try later ![]()
What I’ve done:
- Rims (see separate render)
- Grill
- Foglights and fake airintake
- Audi logo
- The thing around the windows (don’t know what they are called)
- Loads of bugfixs and probably something more that I’ve forgot :)I would love some ideas about how to make the head and rearlights

Well, this friday I decided to continue my work on this model and since the next thing to do is the head- and rearlights and the headlights looked so complicated in my eyes (I’m very new to this, this only my second modeling project in Blender) I decided to go to the local Audi dealer. After sitting quite a while studing the headlight of the A5 I went back home and started work again. So now I have spended some hours on this project again and yet again thinks it’s hell lot of fun doing this.
After my last post I’ve also fixed some bugs (I’ve replaced some triangels with squares) and modeled some proper tires (advan neova re01R’s) to my (not to nice) wheels.
What I need to do more:
- Finish the headlights (add outerglass to it and add materials to it)
- Make some rearlights
- And last(?), model some mirrors the model.
Please leave some comments
ps. As you can see there is nearly no materials added to the headlights at all, if someone has any tips how to do I would love to here them :eyebrowlift:

Come on guys and girls, please leave a comment. Positive, negative, whatever you want
Nice work so far, would love to see a studio render if you have the patience and computing power. My only advice for lights is don’t cut corners - Model them bit by bit, reflector, bulb, every little part. Give them convincing materials and they’ll look awesome.
Few other little things - squares are called “quads” in 3D speak, and triangles are “tri’s”
The things around the windows you don’t know the name of are likely the window or door seal, though I call them window surrounds when naming meshes.
Between the panels, especially the door outline, there is a noticeable gap where the background shines through - try extruding the edges inward or using the solidify selection script to make them look 3D and hide this error.
And I’ve got to go to bed, I’ll continue in the morning before school starts. You’ve got my problem, especially with my Gallardo thread; its as its its invisible, no one posts anything!
To start with, thanks for the comment
I will see if I can setup a studio render for it, maybe tomorrow or this weekend. About the the headlights, that’s pretty much how I’ve done (makingeverything in different parts). I will fix the dooroutline when the car is done, right now I think it just would mess things up for me. ![]()
Thanks for the ‘language lesson’, I’m always glad when I learn something new
And now your Gallardo thread is back on the first page because of me, just a totaly useless post but well… ![]()
Celebrates
Today I started to work on the rearlights, there is still pretty much left to be done but I’m quite happy about what I’ve done so far.
I also found out that the exhaust need to be re-done beacause there is some bug on them, havn’t got any clue about how it got there though…
And also one question, about how many does a normal car i Blender use? Mine is atm about 100 000 with the tires and 55 000 without them, is that normal?

If you’re talking about vertices, my S7 uses 621,515 verts (with tyres) while my Gallardo probably uses a lot more because of the mesh. Unfortunately I can’t check the exact number because I’m rendering a close up of the taillights at the moment.
Looks pretty good, I’d say the back needs some work but the rest is pretty good.
Nictronic755: Alright, thanks for the info
edit: yes, I meant vertices.
gdub33: What more exact do you think needs more work?
Well there ain’t much to say about yet.
It’ s a great model, though there are some imperfections.
But finishing the car first is more important.

Thanks for the comment, here is a minor update on the rearlights, mostly bugfixes but also I’ve also added glass around it. ![]()

Wow! I am very impressed! I’m new to blender (and 3D in general), and hope to do some car modeling in the near future. I now have some inspiration!

@henrysrodshop: I’m happy that you like my work and that I could give you some inspiration.
I’ve attached some kind of studio render I think, what does a scene need to be classifed as an studio render?

Looks nice. What sort of car paint are you planning on using? Matt, Gloss, Metallic, Pearl… Colourshift… etc. etc.
