Austrian emperor crown

Thanks moxstudio, yes details are one of this projects goals

update:

I played around with the pearl material and think I am now settled (again) on something quite plausible.Still only procedurals used.

And after a lot of experimenting I found a workflow for extracting all the necessary maps for the ornamented border around the mitra from the few low quality reference images.

See below for a first test how it works. There are still stretching issues, but that is easily corrected. I am glad I found a good general technique so the fine tuning will come later.

This stuff is amazing, great work! Did you say you’re using Luxrender? Or is this BI?

Thanks Soter.

This project is rendered with luxrender only.

Very nice pearl material. What is the verts/poly count for that project?

Thanks Javier_Bonanza. I am quite pleased with the pearl material too.

Modelling wise the vertex count is currently at ~1.6 million including the subdivision. Without it should be around a factor 16 less so 100000 is a good guess.

During rendering the subdivision is applied to you end up with again 1.6 million.

This project is quite demanding on the rendering hardware, because besides the high polycount I will use several lightgroups ( 6 at the moment) to fine tune the lighting situation, which takes up a lot of memory. Memory consumption is at the moment at ~3GB :D.

Its taking up shape now.

Main material phase now almost done. Then I will start tweaking lighting and minor modeling and material variations.

I played a little bit with the lightgroups to find how the image responds to different lighting setups. I have to say this is an extremely powerful tool

Umm, I think you posted the wrong image, all I see is a reference photo.

OK, So that looks really good, good enough to be a reference.

Keep it up and this might be a featured one.

Thanks HJ05, I’ll try my best

next update:

The modell is now complete again. I still have to get the materials in balance to each other ( some light materials are too bright) and find a nice lighting setup. I may also experiment a little bit with different angles.

I hope to be done with these topics tomorrow, so I can start a first high res render over night.

It looks like a real picture, i am totally amazed. No more words for this.

Wow, this is photorealistic, nothing to crit about the model, but you should try a lighter background, this one is too dark IMHO.

Perfect, no complaint.

Thanks guys. Your comments are very much appreciated.

next update:

  • lighting update
  • composition/camera angle update
  • quite a lot of minor tweaks on the materials

right now I am rendering a first highres version (2000x1600) to see any remaining issues you only notice at this resolution.

See below the render after 40min ( some denoising applied). This forum doesn’t allow higher resolution to post directly, so this is a downscaled version. The final post in Finished Projects will have a link to the high res version. If all goes well, this will be this weekend.

This is looking really awesome, but what will the final scene be? Will it be like it is now? I would like to see it in a realistic museum setting, maybe in a glass case, will a marble wall and a plaque.

Unbelievable. This deserves to be featured.

The scene will be as you see it here. I intentionally do not want to build anything around, just a clean studio shot with the only focus on the crown, like an image from a museums pamphlet.

Thanks adamsucks
