I have a (another) weird question I can’t quite figure out from browsing online: Auto Smooth seems to be misbehaving:
I don’t have any weird normals or geometry problems on the violin “string” that I can find (it’s just an extruded circle, really), and nothing marked as sharp or the like on any of the edges — but Auto Smooth is causing it to shade as if it were bent sharply there.
I did dissolve some loops between the nut and the peg, and then used the knife tool to put a cut right where the string bends around the edge of the pegbox — and this seems to have precipitated the problem — but I cannot replicate it!
Any idea what is causing Auto Smooth to fail here, and what I can do to fix it without dissolving that edge?
I don’t actually need to keep the edge. I just want to understand why this might be happening and what to do about it in the future.
Blender seems to handle the normals pretty well.. when using autonormals.. this is not always the case for every other 3D applications. Or they (or trh user ) can edit the normals in a way which is not the case in that way for blender.. maybe simply because it does it already pretty well.
So in the “early” days you could save these special normals to be used properly in other apps (especially games engines). So.. the most common “trick” for any importated asset in formats other then blender is to disable or even delete the “custome normals” and “simply” let blender handle it.
That’s the somekind of funny or weird thing when “doing some 3D” for a looonger time: people wondering about “weird” things. But ( as for other things too, ) they simply has some “history” .
