Automobili [WIP]

Ragazzi,

I guess it’s time for a little update!
I’ve been working on the houses of the village a bit…

…and also made an olive tree.

I need to work faster if I want this project to be finished before Cars 2 comes out (which is planned for 2012) :stuck_out_tongue:

Ciao

This is really looking great! How did you do the tree?

What are the rendertimes on your props?

I made the trees with the ‘tree from curves’-script. The trunk is modelled by hand nonetheless since it needed more detail.
> BBB-style all the way!

The rendertime of the street in HD (1920*1080px) is about 7 minutes on my pc, which isn’t exactly what one would call a renderfarm. The fact that I had been torturing my pc all day long running too many programs at the same time also didn’t exactly speed up the render neither, I guess. :eyebrowlift2:

It starts to look like a village… Hurray! Hope you like.

Nevertheless, still a lot of work to do. And if that isn’t enough, I also redid the piaggio ape.
I will post renders when they’re worth it being posted.

I really wanna learn how to make buildings like that. I love that architecture. Where/How did you learn (or teach yourself)? I don’t reall know that many techniques on building in blender. Any tips on where some good tutorials are?
Oh! and is that Ambient Occlussion thing what makes them look so real on the lighting aspect?

Making buildings in blender isn’t that hard IMO. I taught it myself by just trying so unforunatelly I don’t have any links to good tutorials. But nevertheless I’ll try to give you some tips!

  • Since you won’t be able to see the inside of the houses in my short, the building are actually more or less simple planes with the windows and doors extruded out (well, inwards).
  • All the window-sills, shutters, terraces, roof tiles,… are seperate objects and are of course placed afterwards. None of this objects are hard to make: they are all lowpoly and edgy (so I didn’t use subsurf much).
  • The roof tiles are just placed with array which is a pretty neat feature to duplicate a lot of objects without losing the overview.
  • But defenitely, the magic word here is IMPERFECTION (or DISTORTION). Just look at the world and you’ll realise almost nothing is perfect. P.e. I’m pretty sure nothing on your desk is laying perfectly parallel. Another example: if you drop a glass it will smash to pieces but there’s no way a bunch of pieces will form a glass when you drop em. >> Nature aspires to distortion. Just keep that in mind while modelling and texturing and your render will look a lot better. The UV textures of the houses are full of dirt, scratches, peeled paint, rust (that leaked from the lamp),…This “theory” is only useful if you try to make a realistic scene. Renders made by architects often don’t look realistic IMO because they are too smooth.

Yep, I used AO and a sun to cast nice shadows.

I hope this helped. Maybe I should write a good tutorial once about it.

Finally a new update: a Fiat Panda I started working on this week.
Let’s hope next updates won’t take that long.

Already a small update! I made this a while ago but forgot to post it here.
Hope you like it. I’ll try to post a render of it soon.

hi gallardo,

glad to see you’re still working on your movie! i stumbled upon your project by accident and while reading the first posts date was scared you wouldn’t.
so in general: everything looks great so far!

the points i have to add/ask:
i would prefer a citroen DS (for the lady, of course ;)) and maybe a large peugeot (like the 504) as the male character. the R4 and the 2CV are somehow to cute. those big (and somehow elegant cars) may already give them a snobbish character.
btw, it’s funny you mentioned some posts before that the french only speak french, is this the picture italians have from the french (well, almost everyone i know who ever has been to france says so :D)?
can you say in a few words how you made the little wall in the picture an the bottom of page 3?
finally, i really do like your street signs, they look SO realistic! and i especially like the two signs pointing to rome in different directions. that’s perfectly italian, i would say

so, keep on working!

ciao

Wow I havent been here in a looooong time. Lo good work!

Thanks for the replies guys! They really motivate me to go on with this project.

And here are some replies to fahrer17’s questions:

I guess you’re right that a DS and a 504 would better fit the personalities. But since those cars are one of the few things I modelled so far, I’ll stick with 'em (for now).

First of all: I’m not Italian; I’m a Belgian who loves Italy.
Secondly: French people are often depicted as arrogant people with moustaches, striped shirts and berrets. They always wxear a baguette under their arm, play jeu de boules/pétanque in their spare time and live in a ménage à trois. They are rude to tourists and don’t try to speak any other language since they think French is the most beautiful language in the world. And if they speak another language, they speak it with a very strong accent. “ah oui, zis izzz very true.”

Of course, these are just stereotypes and a lot of them are probably totally wrong but I think stereotypes are quite funny though and that’s why I like to put them in my short.
Correct me if I’m wrong but I have the impression that not only the French only speak their own language; the same could be said for a lot of Spanish, English, Italian, German,… people. It has a lot to do with education I guess. In Belgium p.e. we get Dutch, French, English and German at school.

It’s a simple mesh with two textures UV-mapped to it: a colourmap and a normalmap.
I hope the attached image makes it clear.

I smell stereotypes

hi gallardo,

thank you for your explanation.

And you’re probably right with your answer regarding the stereotypes, especially concerning the problem of individual education. But i will never forget that argueing after an accident i have seen a couple of years ago in italy (luckily i wasn’t involved and nothing has happened except some more scratches to an old fiat). That WAS typical italian (can you imagine how italians discuss? It was excactly like this! :D).

Anyway, no offense in case my english might be misunderstandable!

And: i’m waiting impatiently for your updates!

Cheers

Finally I can post some moving images here!
Not a rendered animation though, just a quick rig/animation test.
Watch it on vimeo!
Watch it on youtube!

Looks very good, especially the trees, keep up the good work!

I made a new (rigged) suspension for my R4. Eventhough it’s not a really tough thing to model, I’m pretty happy with it, considered the fact that it’s quite hard to find any images of it. Maybe I should make another small video to show the working rig.
