I first will mention I have a new found “dislike” for malware, or the purpose to write such things.
What happened?
Late Sunday night just as I was about to sleep for the night, I see a Facebook message from Fweeb alerting to something afoot on BA. I cracked open the laptop an sure enough, there was some strange 301 redirect hack/malware on the site taking folks to some far off distant land. I also appreciate the heads up from some additional users sending in support tickets.
The site was put into maintenance mode and after converging with Rackspace and Vbulletin Support the malware was found, removed and the plugin responsible was disabled. Being over cautions, DB passwords were updated/changed as well. However this sent us hunting some other “why is that happening” type errors. Long story short the feature row connection was throwing the error and this has also been fixed.
Clean files have been uploaded and several DB scans have been had to give the site a good bath. There is no evidence that any personal or passwords were compromised. Though I am sure we are all changing our passwords every 3 months anyways right? hehe
Please be patient through the recovery process if somethings are missing, or not loading. Just please let me know at support@cgcookie.com and will jump on it.
Going Forward
All credentials for the site (backends) have been updated, plugins updated to the latest and greatest. There are some additional steps I am going to look to take, password protect directories with .htaccess and all of that jazz. However I may just roll off of this chair onto my couch to sleep and to fight it tomorrow morning.
Thank you again for the patience and support while we clean-up the site. Happy Tuesday!
