Backbuffer with image sequence

I have an animation of images saved as 0001.tga 0002.tga 0003.tga ect and I would like to render them in the background, with my 3d scene in front. I am aware that I can render the scene with an alpha layer then combine it with the video sequence editor but i would like to be able to hit the render button and not have to go through that mess to see the final output. From doing some searching on google and such i have found that you can do #.tga and it should replace the # with a 4 digit frame number like 0001 or 0002 resulting the background pic changing as the scene progresses. However, this option has not worked out for me, and the background is black. I know that I have other settings right because when I input the backbuffer to be 0044.tga or other number it renders just fine. Any solution?

well, you have to set it to sequence rather than image in the options (there is also movie and generated). However, when I do this, it says “can not get an image”, yet when using just a single frame it is fine. I have tried different formats as well, not sure what is going on. Is this a bug in 2.45?
